Is Donald Trump a Christian?

The other day, one of my children announced, "You know, Trump is a Christian."

"Why do you think that?"  I asked.

"My camp leader told me he was."

Why does this keep coming up?  Is it that whole thing with him issuing his own Bible?  Or maybe because he's been inside a church?  I mean, I've been inside the Tillamook factory, but that doesn't mean I'm a block of cheese.

I don't claim to know Trump's relationship with God, nor do I intend to judge him, but I think it might be worse to remain silent in this case.

Here's what I shared with my child:

In the Bible it says good trees bear good fruit and bad trees bear bad fruit.  It also says we can know people by their works. (Matthew 7:17-20)

There are also verses in the Bible that encourage kindness towards foreigners.  (Jeremiah 7:4-6, Jeremiah 22:3, Deuteronomy 10:18-19, Exodus 23:9, Leviticus 19:33-34, Malachi 3:5, etc.)  It seems that Trump seems to feel that immigrants don't belong in the United States, nor do they deserve to be treated kindly.

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.  And what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. -Micah 6:8
